To make sure that 2023 gets off to a great start, now’s the time to begin working on your New Year’s resolutions. When thinking of the kind of changes you want to make, take the time to consider the state of your smile. Is there any way you could be doing a better job of maintaining excellent oral health? Below are 5 resolution ideas that your dentist might suggest to keep your grin safe over the next 12 months.
1. Start Brushing Longer
Chances are that you already brush your teeth twice a day, but are you spending enough time doing it? The average person brushes for about 45 to 70 seconds, but dentists typically recommend brushing for two minutes at a time. If your brushing sessions last less than that, chances are that harmful plaque is building up in the areas that you’re missing. This year, start setting a timer before you start brushing so that you can be sure that you’re cleaning your teeth thoroughly.
2. Make Flossing a Daily Habit
Many American adults floss at least once a week, but only about 40% floss every day, and 20% never floss at all. When you skip flossing, the harmful bacteria and food particles between your teeth have more of a chance to cause cavities and gum disease. You can significantly improve your oral health by turning flossing into a daily habit. Help yourself remember by setting a reminder on your phone or leaving your dental floss on your toothpaste tube.
3. Snack Less
Most people who resolve to snack less do so to lose weight. But what you may not realize is that snacking can also influence your oral health in a big way. Whenever you eat, it takes time for your saliva to restore the acidity levels in your mouth to normal. The more often you eat, the more time your teeth spend in an acidic environment that wears away their enamel. Protect your grin during the new year by cutting down on between-meal snacking.
4. Drink Less Sugar
How many sugary beverages do you consume every day? Sugar is often found in soda, coffee, sports drinks, tea, and even certain alcoholic drinks. When the bacteria in your mouth are exposed to sugar, they produce acids that can lead to cavities. Reducing your intake of sugary drinks can help keep your smile safe. When you do enjoy these beverages, drink them through a straw whenever possible so that they don’t spend as much time in contact with your teeth.
5. Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months
One resolution you should definitely keep is to visit your dentist at least twice before 2023 ends. Regular dental appointments are crucial for avoiding dental emergencies; it’s always easier to treat oral health issues while they’re still in their early stages.
